The BABESCH Foundation is pleased to announce the appointment of Leo Voogt as Chairman of the Board of the Foundation, as of March 1st 2008.
Drs. Leo Voogt (1959) is the current Director of Museum Meermanno-Westreenianum in The Hague. Museum Meermanno, with its internationally renowned collection of books and manuscripts, also harbours an interesting collection of antiquities (prehistoric, Egyptian, Greek, Etruscan, Roman and provincial Roman). http://www.meermanno.nl
Mr. Voogt is enthousiastic about his appointment to the Board: 'BABESCH was founded in 1926. From the beginning, A.W. Byvanck was a driving force behind the periodical, which at the t ime was called Bulletin Antieke Beschaving. In his early carreer, Byvanck played an important part in the Museum Meermanno. Under scrutiny from his father (the director of the Royal Library in The Hague) he worked as a volunteer from 1909 to 1913 on the first scientific documentation of the museum's collection of antiquities. From 1917 he worked in Leyden in the field of Classical Archaeology. I find it a nice twist of fate that the Board of BABESCH will now hold their meetings in the same museum where Byvanck made his first scholarly steps.'
The Board, the editors, and all who collaborate in publishing BABESCH would like to thank retiring Chairman Maarten van Beek for his two decades of dedication and commitment. His chairmanship has meant a professionalisation of BABESCH and made our periodical the communal archaeological journal of The Netherlands and Belgium.
